This calculator adjusts the tile quantity based on the chosen laying pattern. More complex patterns create more edge cuts and therefore more waste.
The formula
Tiles = Ceiling(Area ÷ Tile area × (1 + Pattern waste %))
Cut tiles ≈ Total tiles × Waste % × 0.8 (rough rule of thumb only, not a BS 5385 figure — the real cut count depends on room size, tile size and set-out)
For a 15 m² floor with 300×600mm tiles in herringbone (18% waste): 15 ÷ 0.18 × 1.18 = 99 tiles. As a rough guide, ~14 of those will be cut tiles.
Pattern waste factors: straight 10%, brick bond 12%, diagonal 15%, herringbone 18%, chevron 20% — the first four per BS 5385 and standard UK tiler practice; basket weave (~18%) and chevron sit outside the patterns BS 5385 names directly, so are trade-practice estimates.

Herringbone pattern runs at 45° to the walls, meaning every tile at the edges needs to be cut at an angle. This creates many small triangular offcuts that can't be reused. Typically ~18% waste is allowed vs 10% for a straight grid, in line with BS 5385 and standard UK tiler practice. The waste increases further in small or awkwardly shaped rooms where there are more edge cuts relative to the area — plan for 20–22% in those cases.
Brick bond (running bond/offset) is the most popular pattern in the UK — it's classic, hides imperfections in wall flatness, and suits the popular metro/subway tile format. Each row is offset by half a tile width. Waste is moderate at 12%. Straight grid is simplest with 10% waste. Herringbone is trendy but needs more skill and waste.
Diagonal tiling runs at 45° to the walls. Start by snapping chalk lines from corner to corner to find the centre. Lay the first tile at the intersection, then work outwards. All edge tiles need 45° cuts. Use a wet saw with an adjustable fence for consistent angle cuts. Allow 15% waste for edge cuts.
Rectangular tiles with a 2:1 ratio work best — 100×200mm, 150×300mm, or 200×400mm are ideal. Larger tiles (300×600mm) create a dramatic herringbone but need more precision. Small mosaics on herringbone mesh sheets are easiest for DIY. The pattern works on both floors and walls.
Yes — combining patterns is a popular design technique. For example, a herringbone feature panel within a straight-laid floor, or a diagonal border around a straight field. Plan the transitions carefully and account for waste separately for each pattern area. Transition strips or a grout line can define the boundary between patterns.
