What size tile trim do I need?

Tile trim should match your tile thickness. For 8mm tiles, use 8mm trim. For 10mm tiles, use 10mm trim. The trim sits slightly above the tile surface (about 1mm) for a neat finish. If your tiles vary in thickness (handmade or natural stone), use the thickest tile measurement. Most UK tiles are 8-12mm thick.

Where do I need tile trim?

Tile trim is needed on any exposed tile edge — where tiles end at a wall corner, window reveal, shelf edge, or where tiling finishes partway along a wall. External corners (outward-facing) are the most common location. Internal corners (inward-facing) can use trim but are often just grouted. Tile trim joiners (connectors) create a neat junction between two lengths of trim. They're essential — butting two pieces together without a joiner looks untidy and can separate over time. Internal and external corner pieces are pre-formed 90° turns that give a professional finish. All joiners and corners should match the trim profile and finish.

Can I tile without trim?

Yes — alternatives to tile trim include: mitring tile edges at 45° for external corners (requires skill and a wet saw), using bullnose tiles (with a factory-finished rounded edge), or simply grouting exposed edges. Mitring gives the most seamless look but is time-consuming and fragile on thin tiles. For DIY, trim is easier and more forgiving.

How We Calculate This

This calculator works out the number of tile trim pieces, corner pieces, and joiners needed for your tiling project based on the total exposed edge length.

The formula

Trim pieces = Ceiling(Exposed edge length ÷ Trim piece length)

Joiners = Trim pieces - 1 (per continuous run)

Corner pieces = Count of each type

For example, 8m of exposed edges with 2 external corners: 8 ÷ 2.5 = 3.2 → 4 pieces. Joiners = 3. Plus 2 external corner pieces. Total: 4 trim pieces + 3 joiners + 2 corners.
