How We Calculate This

This calculator determines the quantity of tactile paving units needed based on UK Department for Transport guidance on tactile paving surfaces. It covers blister and corduroy surfaces for crossings, platforms, and hazard warnings.

Surface type selection

The calculator automatically recommends the correct surface type based on the application:

  • Blister surface: Controlled crossings, uncontrolled crossings and shared/courtesy crossings
  • Off-street platform edge surface: A separate offset-dome surface for rail and tram platform edges (not the same product as the crossing blister)
  • Corduroy surface: Top and bottom of steps, level crossings and other hazard warnings

Colour guidance

  • Red: Mandatory at controlled (signalised) crossings only — the red colour signifies a controlled crossing to partially sighted people (DfT 2021 Chapter 1, section 1.5.1)
  • Buff or any non-red contrasting colour: Uncontrolled crossings — red must never be used here (DfT 2021 Chapter 1, section 1.5.2)
  • Any colour other than red: Off-street platform edge surface, chosen to contrast with its surroundings (DfT 2021 Chapter 3, section 3.2)
  • Buff or natural stone: Corduroy hazard warnings, to contrast with the surrounding paving

Quantity calculation

The number of pavers is calculated from the crossing width and tactile depth, rounded up to whole pavers. A 10% waste allowance is added for cuts, breakage, and spares. The calculator also estimates bedding material (mortar or adhesive) quantities.

Layout options

For corner crossings, the L-shape layout option calculates material for two perpendicular arms of tactile paving that meet at a corner, accounting for the overlap area.
