How Deep Should Drainage Pipes Be Buried?

Quick Answer

At least 600mm under a garden or field, at least 900mm under a driveway or road, for standard plastic pipe

Per Building Regulations Approved Document H (2015 edition) Table 10, measured to the top (crown) of the pipe. Rigid clay or concrete pipe needs 1200mm under a driveway or road instead of 900mm. Under a public road AD H also notes a 1500mm minimum for plastic pipe where a parallel utility excavation could remove side support (Table 10, note 5). Anything shallower than the table minimum needs protecting with a concrete slab, not just extra soil.

Worked Example: Cover Building Up Along a Garden Run

A 100mm uPVC foul drain leaves the house at a typical starting cover of 500mm and falls at the standard minimum gradient for a 100mm pipe carrying WC flow, 1:80 (12.5mm per metre, per AD H Table 6, the same fall used in our drainage gradient answer), across 12m of level garden to a junction.

  • Fall over the run: 12m × 12.5mm = 150mm
  • Cover at the junction: 500mm + 150mm = 650mm
  • 650mm already clears AD H Table 10’s 600mm minimum for a pipe laid in a field or garden, with 50mm to spare

Worked Example: Why a Driveway Crossing Can Need Protection

The same drain continues for a further 5m to cross the driveway on its way to the road connection. Over that extra 5m it falls another 5 × 12.5mm = 62.5mm.

  • Cover where it meets the drive: 650mm + 62.5mm = 712.5mm (about 713mm)
  • AD H Table 10 requires 900mm minimum cover for plastic pipe under a light road or driveway
  • 713mm is short of that minimum by 900mm − 713mm = 187mm

Digging the whole 17m run deeper just to fix the last 5m usually is not practical or necessary. Per AD H paragraph 2.44, where the table minimum cannot be reached, the pipe should instead be protected with a reinforced concrete cover slab, separated from the pipe by a flexible filler with at least 75mm of granular bedding material between the top of the pipe and the underside of that filler (AD H Diagram 11). AD H’s table notes also allow a second compliance route: an alternative pipe strength and bedding class combination justified under BS EN 1295. Re-routing the run to avoid the shallow crossing altogether is sensible practical advice, but it is not a route AD H itself sets out; it simply avoids the problem rather than being a Building Regulations compliance option in its own right.

Table 10 (the table for plastic and other flexible pipe) carries one more depth rule worth knowing: if a run like this would otherwise sit shallower than 1.5m inside a trench that lies close and parallel to a separate excavation, cover must still be at least 1.5m irrespective of pipe strength, and a special calculation to BS EN 1295 is needed instead of the standard 600mm/900mm table minimum. That extra note applies to flexible pipe under Table 10; it is not carried over to the rigid clay or concrete tables covered next.

Why the Depth Changes Under a Driveway or Road

Approved Document H does not use the words “garden” or “driveway” itself: Table 10 groups ground into pipe “laid in fields” (the same open, non-trafficked ground a garden or lawn falls into) and pipe “laid in light or main roads” (which covers a driveway, since it carries vehicle loading the same as a public road does). The depth requirement jumps from 600mm to 900mm at that boundary because a vehicle driving over the ground applies a load the pipe and its bedding would not otherwise have to resist; more soil above the pipe spreads that load out before it reaches the pipe wall.

Rigid Pipe Needs More Cover Than Plastic

The 900mm figure above is for plastic (uPVC/thermoplastic) pipe to BS EN 1401, by far the most common material in new domestic drainage and the one this site’s own drainage pipe sizes reference is based on. If vitrified clay or concrete pipe is used instead (Tables 8 and 9), the minimum cover under a driveway or road rises to 1200mm regardless of whether it is classed as a light or main road, because those rigid materials are tested to a different strength class than plastic.

Bedding Still Matters, Not Just Depth

Meeting the minimum cover figure is only half the job: the pipe also needs the right bedding material underneath and around it to actually carry the load that cover is meant to spread. Always confirm depths with your local building control body before excavating, and check with your water undertaker separately if the drain will become a public sewer, since some adopting authorities set stricter cover requirements than the Building Regulations minimum.
