Pipe Bedding Calculator — Granular Bed, Haunch & Surround Volumes

Calculate pea gravel or concrete volumes for drainage pipe bedding classes D, N, F, B, S and A based on trench width, pipe diameter and run length, to the geometry dimensioned in Approved Document H (2015) Diagram 10 and National Highways CD 533.

How We Calculate This

This calculator determines the volume of bedding material needed based on the pipe diameter (outside diameter), trench width, bedding class and pipe run length. The class geometry for D, N, F and B is dimensioned on Approved Document H (2015) Diagram 10; Class S comes from National Highways CD 533 Table 3.21N2, which cites BS 9295. BS EN 1610 covers the installation and the grading of the granular material.

The formula

For bed-only classes (N and F) the material is a simple rectangular bed:

Bed Volume = Length × Trench Width × Bed Depth

For the classes that bring material up around the pipe (B, S and concrete Class A) the material is one continuous trench band, with the pipe cross-section subtracted only over the part of the pipe the material actually reaches, so nothing is double-counted:

Volume = Length × [Trench Width × Envelope Height − Pipe area inside the envelope]

Envelope Height is measured from the trench formation level, which is the underside of the bed:

  • Class N and Class F: Bed only. The pipe sits on the bed, so nothing is subtracted
  • Class B: Bed + OD/2. Exactly half the pipe is inside it, so π·(OD/2)²/2 is subtracted
  • Class S: Bed + OD + 300mm. The whole pipe is inside it
  • Class A: Bed + OD + 150mm of concrete. The whole pipe is inside it

Tonnes = Volume × density (pea gravel ≈ 1.6 t/m³; C20/25 concrete ≈ 2.4 t/m³)

Bedding classes

  • Class D: pipe on trimmed natural trench bottom — no imported bedding
  • Class N: ~100mm granular bed only
  • Class F: flat granular bed with a settlement allowance
  • Class B: 100mm bed + haunch to half the pipe depth, dimensioned OD/2 (standard domestic)
  • Class S: full granular surround to 300mm above the crown
  • Class A: C20/25 concrete (BS 8500 GEN3) cradle/surround for heavy loading or shallow cover

Classes D, N, F and B are dimensioned on Approved Document H (2015) Diagram 10 “Bedding for pipes”, section (a) rigid pipes, which captions Class B “Granular fill to half depth of pipe” and dimensions it OD/2. The 150mm band drawn above the crown on those details is Diagram 10 Key 1 selected fill(screened site-won material free from stones larger than 40mm), not imported granular, so it counts as backfill and is not included in the bedding volume above. Class S and Class A are not drawn in Diagram 10: the 300mm Class S surround comes from National Highways CD 533 Table 3.21N2, and the 150mm Class A concrete surround is the conventional UK detail rather than a figure from a British Standard, so confirm it against the engineer’s drawing.
