How We Calculate This

This calculator determines material quantities for the three main basement waterproofing systems defined in BS 8102:2022 (Code of Practice for Protection of Below Ground Structures Against Water).

Type A — Tanking

Cementitious slurry is applied in multiple coats to wall and floor surfaces. Quantity = total area × coverage rate (kg/m²) × number of coats. The coverage rate is product-specific: around 1.0–1.5 kg/m² per coat for low-pressure / Sika Brushcoat-class slurries, and 2–3 kg/m² per coat for standard grey tanking slurries (e.g. Permagard PermaSEAL). Always use the rate on your chosen product's data sheet.

Type B — Structural

Reinforced concrete designed to be waterproof in itself (watertight construction per BS EN 1992-3). Wall and slab thickness are both inputs — typically 250–300 mm walls and 200–300 mm slabs. Concrete volume = (wall area × wall thickness) + (floor area × slab thickness).

Type C — Drained

Cavity drain membrane (studded HDPE sheet) is fixed to walls and floor with a channel drain at the perimeter collecting water to a sump pump. Membrane area includes a 10% overlap allowance. The channel-drain length is estimated from the floor area assuming a square room (perimeter = 4 × √area); for long, narrow basements the true wall-to-floor perimeter is larger, so add roughly 10–20% to the figure shown.
