How We Calculate This

This calculator determines ventilation requirements for basement rooms per Approved Document F (Ventilation) of the Building Regulations for England. It considers room use, occupancy, and whether natural ventilation via windows is available.

Ventilation rates

Habitable rooms (bedroom, living, study, gym, cinema): Approved Document F sets no per-person extract rate for these rooms — their provision comes from the whole-dwelling supply rate with an overall floor of 0.3 L/s per m² of internal floor area (para 1.24). This tool sizes fresh-air supply to the greater of the CIBSE Guide A occupant rate (10 L/s per person) and that 0.3 L/s/m² floor. (The often-quoted ‘8 L/s per person’ is the Scottish sedentary rate, not Part F.)

Wet rooms: Kitchens require 30 L/s intermittent extract with a cooker hood ducted outside adjacent to the hob, or 60 L/s with no hood or a recirculating hood (ADF 2021 Table 1.1). Utility rooms require 30 L/s. Bathrooms require 15 L/s intermittent (or 8 L/s continuous, Table 1.2).

System selection

If openable windows are present (via lightwell), natural ventilation with background (trickle) ventilators may suffice. Otherwise, mechanical ventilation is required — MVHR is recommended for energy efficiency and comfort. Duct sizing keeps air velocity below about 5 m/s (the top of the 3–5 m/s domestic band) to control noise.

Basement bedrooms — escape window

A basement bedroom needs an emergency escape window per Approved Document B Vol 1 — at least 0.33 m² unobstructed openable area, minimum 450 mm high × 450 mm wide, sill no more than 1100 mm above floor — unless served by an alternative protected escape route. Lightwell size itself is set by your local planning authority, not by a national percentage rule; confirm it before construction.
