How We Calculate This

This calculator determines hinge positions, latch height, clearance margins and fire door hardware requirements based on door type and dimensions.

The formula

Top hinge: 150mm (6 in) from door top
Bottom hinge: 225mm (9 in) from door bottom
Centre hinge: midway (for 3-hinge doors)
Latch: 900–1050mm from floor (commonly 1000mm)

How many hinges

  • Standard internal doors: 2 hinges
  • Fire doors, external doors and leaves over 2040mm: 3 hinges
  • Very heavy or thick leaves may take 4 hinges — check the leaf weight

Door margins

  • Standard: 2–3mm top and sides, 8–10mm bottom (3–5mm for hard floors)
  • Fire doors: max 3mm top/sides, max 8mm bottom
  • Fire doors take an intumescent strip to the head and both jambs (3 sides; not the threshold)
  • Always check the door is square before fitting
