How We Calculate This

This calculator determines the materials needed for sash window repair: cords, counterbalance weights sized to sash weight, draught stripping, and replacement beading.

The formula

Cords = 4 per window (2 per sash)
Sash weight = Glass area × (thickness × 2.5 kg/m²) + ~3.5 kg frame
Weight each = Sash weight ÷ 2
Draught strip = Sash perimeter × 2 sashes (generous allowance)

The ~3.5 kg frame allowance suits a small single-glazed sash; weigh a large or double-glazed sash for an exact counterweight. The draught-strip figure allows the full perimeter of both sashes — more than the real sealed run (roughly the four stiles, meeting rail and top/cill rails) so you have offcuts to spare. Cord length is a generous rule of thumb: cut long and trim on fitting.
