Soakaway Crate Calculator — Crate Count, Membrane & Excavation

Calculate the number of soakaway crates needed from your BRE 365 volume, plus membrane wrap area, pipe connections and excavation volume.

From BRE 365 percolation test results

How We Calculate This

This calculator converts your required soakaway volume (from BRE 365 testing) into the number of crates needed, accounting for the void ratio.

The formula

Crates Needed = ceil(Required Volume / (Crate Volume × Void Ratio))

Membrane Area = Surface Area × (1 + Overlap Factor)

Typical crate sizes

  • Standard: 1000 × 500 × 400mm, 95% void
  • Heavy duty: 1000 × 500 × 400mm, 92% void (40t rated)
  • Shallow: 1000 × 500 × 200mm, 95% void
