Soakaway Crate Calculator — Crate Count, Membrane & Excavation

Calculate the number of soakaway crates needed from your BRE 365 volume, plus membrane wrap area, pipe connections and excavation volume.

Required storage volume from your BRE 365 design (soil infiltration rate + impermeable area + design rainfall)

Cost per individual crate

How We Calculate This

This calculator converts your required soakaway volume (from BRE 365 testing) into the number of crates needed, accounting for the void ratio.

The formula

Crates Needed = ceil(Required Volume / (Crate Volume × Void Ratio))

Membrane Area = Surface Area × (1 + Overlap Factor)

Typical crate sizes

  • Standard: 1000 × 500 × 400mm, 95% void (mainstream crates such as Polypipe Polystorm and Hydrocell publish 95% even at 40–62 t/m² load ratings)
  • Heavy-duty: 1000 × 500 × 400mm — we use a conservative 92% void for thicker-walled deep-bury units, but many heavy-duty crates are still 95%; always confirm the void ratio on your product datasheet
  • Shallow: 1000 × 500 × 200mm, 95% void

Crate width is fixed at the universal 500mm module; adjust the crate length under Advanced options if your product differs.
