How We Calculate This

This calculator optimises the board layout for minimum waste, determines nogging positions at unsupported joints, and calculates screw quantities at the correct centres. For a full table of UK plasterboard sizes and ceiling board thicknesses, see our plasterboard sizes reference.

The formula

Boards = (Boards across width × Boards along length) × (1 + Waste %)

Screws = (Perimeter ÷ 150mm) + (Field joists × Joist span ÷ 230mm), × 1.1 contingency

For a 4m × 3m room with 2400×1200mm boards: across = 3, along = 2 = 6 boards. With a 10% waste allowance = 7 boards. With joists at 400mm centres, noggings at the 1 line of end joints × ceil(3m ÷ 0.4m) = 8 bays = 8 noggings.

The 10% wastage is a typical trade allowance, not a fixed standard, and a further 10% screw contingency covers mis-drives and snapped heads — adjust to suit your job.

Screw centres (British Gypsum ceiling spec)

  • Board ends & perimeter: 150mm centres
  • Field: maximum 230mm centres where boards cross intermediate joists (300mm is the partition spacing, not the ceiling one)
  • Set depth: just below the paper surface without breaking through
  • Edge distance: at least 10mm from a bound edge, 13mm from a cut edge
