This calculator determines the plasterboard, screws, tape and compound needed for double-boarding with correctly staggered joints.
The formula
Boards per layer = (Wall area ÷ Board area) × (1 + Waste %)
Total boards = Boards per layer × 2
For 20 m² wall area: boards per layer = 20 ÷ 2.88 × 1.1 = 8. Total = 8 × 2 = 16 boards. Inner screws (32mm): ~264. Outer screws (42mm): ~330. Screw, joint-tape and compound figures are estimates (~12–15 screws/m², ~1.5 m joint/m², ~0.5 kg compound/m²) — always confirm against the board manufacturer’s fixing specification for your system.

Frequently Asked Questions
Staggering joints between the inner and outer board layers by at least 600mm prevents a continuous weakness line through the wall. This is critical for fire resistance (a straight-through joint allows fire to pass between layers) and acoustic performance (aligned joints create a sound transmission path). Stagger horizontal and vertical joints independently.
For the inner (first) layer, use 32mm drywall screws to penetrate at least 10mm into the stud. For the outer (second) layer, use 42mm screws that pass through both boards and into the stud. Some specifications require 45mm for the outer layer. Never use screws that are too short — they must achieve minimum 10mm penetration into the stud or channel behind.
No, the inner layer joints do not need to be taped or filled — they will be covered by the outer board layer. Only the outer layer joints need to be taped and jointed. However, for acoustic applications, it is good practice to seal inner layer joints with acoustic sealant to prevent sound transmission through the gaps.
The outer layer screws should be at different centres from the inner layer to avoid hitting them. Per British Gypsum WhiteBook guidance, the inner (first) layer is fixed around the board perimeter only at max 300mm centres (200mm at external corners); the outer (face) layer is then fixed to the perimeter AND the intermediate studs at max 300mm centres (150–200mm at the perimeter). Because the stud/joist positions are the same, offset the outer screw positions by half the spacing so they miss the inner-layer screws. Use a stud finder if necessary.
Double boarding is required for: 60-minute fire-rated partitions (2 × 15mm fire-rated boards each side), acoustic party walls to meet Part E, high-impact areas (e.g. corridors, schools), and where enhanced acoustic or fire performance is needed. It is also common in conversions to flats where both fire and sound targets must be met on the same wall.
