Electrical work in dwellings can be notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations. Treat these figures as planning guidance only: circuits must be designed, installed and certified to BS 7671 by a competent person, normally a registered electrician.

How We Calculate This

Trunking fill is worked out geometrically: each cable’s overall cross-sectional area (single-core 6491X by its overall diameter; flat twin-and-earth or three-core by its overall width × height, taken from manufacturer datasheets) is summed and compared with the trunking’s internal area.

Fill % = (Sum of cable areas ÷ Trunking internal area) × 100

The pass limit is the 45% space factor— an IET On-Site Guide (Appendix E) and industry convention, not a BS 7671 figure. The same tables also support the alternative IET cable-factor method (sum of tabulated cable factors must not exceed the tabulated trunking factor, e.g. 50×50mm = 1037).

Common Trunking Capacities at 45% (1.5mm² singles, ~7.5mm² each)

  • 25×16mm: ~180mm² usable — ~24× 1.5mm² singles
  • 50×25mm: ~562mm² usable — ~75× 1.5mm² singles
  • 50×50mm: ~1,125mm² usable — ~150× 1.5mm² singles
  • 100×50mm: ~2,250mm² usable — ~300× 1.5mm² singles
  • 100×100mm: ~4,500mm² usable — ~600× 1.5mm² singles

Areas shown are nominal internal dimensions; a manufacturer’s actual usable area may be slightly lower. In practice cable count is rarely the limiting factor — current grouping derating (BS 7671 Table 4C1) usually governs first.
