Extension Roof Calculator — Materials & Quantities

Calculate roofing materials for extension pitched or flat roofs including tiles, felt, battens, membrane, insulation and firring strips.

How We Calculate This

This calculator determines material quantities for extension roofs based on plan dimensions and roof type.

Pitched roof

Slope area = 2 × rafter length × roof length, where rafter = (span/2) ÷ cos(pitch). Tile count = slope area × tiles per m² × waste factor. The batten gauge (spacing) auto-sets from the tile type — single-lap interlocking tiles use a wide gauge (≈345mm), whereas double-lap plain clay (≈100mm) and natural slate (≈155–205mm) use a much closer gauge and therefore far more battens. Insulation is figured on the slope area, matching a warm pitched (between-and-over-rafter) build; for ceiling-level cold-roof insulation laid flat, use the plan area instead.

Flat roof

Membrane area = plan area × 1.15 (for upstands and overlaps) × waste factor. Insulation is figured on the plan area (laid flat on the deck). Firring strips at 400mm centres across the width create the minimum 1:40 fall (BS 6229 / Approved Document H).

The roof is one stage of the build — see all the calculators for building an extension, from the roof down to foundations.
