How We Calculate This

This calculator gives an indicative budget cost for passive fire protection of structural members. It is an estimating tool, not a fire-engineering specification.

The formula

Total = (Surface area × material rate × rating multiplier) + Labour + Primer

  • Surface area = section perimeter (Hp) × member length × number of members
  • The material rate you enter is supply only; a rating multiplier scales it up for longer fire periods (more build)
  • Labour is a per-m² rate by protection type, plus 15% for each coat beyond the first
  • The all-in £/m² (supply & apply) is the total divided by the protected area

About the DFT figure

The dry film thickness shown for intumescent paint is a mid-range guide tied only to the fire rating. The real required DFT also depends on the section factor Hp/A and the limiting steel temperature, and must come from the manufacturer's loading tables assessed to BS EN 13381-8 (intumescent) or BS EN 13381-4 (boards and cementitious sprays). Cost rates here are indicative and unsourced — there is no published UK £/m² index, so confirm with a fire-protection contractor.
