Window Energy Rating Calculator — WER Band Estimator

Estimate the BFRC window energy rating band (A++ to E) from U-value, solar gain and air leakage. Check Part L compliance for replacement windows.

Whole-window U-value

Total solar energy transmittance (0-1)

Effective heat loss from air infiltration (BS 6375), typically ~0.05

How We Calculate This

This calculator uses the BFRC (British Fenestration Rating Council) methodology to estimate the window energy rating from three key parameters.

The BFRC equation

Rating = (218.6 × 0.9 × g) − 68.5 × (Uw + L)

  • g = glass solar energy transmittance (g-value, 0 to 1, at normal incidence); the 0.9 is the Fw solar-gain correction factor (EN ISO 13790, formerly EN 832), allowing for the angle of the sun through the year — not a frame allowance
  • Uw = whole-window U-value (W/m²K)
  • L = effective heat loss from air infiltration (W/m²K, from BS 6375 testing), added to Uw inside the 68.5 bracket — typically ~0.05

WER bands

  • A++ ≥ +20 kWh/m²/yr
  • A+ ≥ +10 kWh/m²/yr
  • A ≥ 0 kWh/m²/yr
  • B ≥ -10 kWh/m²/yr
  • C ≥ -20, D ≥ -30, E < -30
