How We Calculate This

This calculator estimates all preparation materials needed before painting. The main variable is wall condition — poor condition walls need significantly more filler and sanding time.

The formula

Sugar soap solution (L) = Total area × 0.1 L/m² × Wastage

Concentrate (L) = Solution × (125 ml ÷ 4500 ml), then rounded up to whole 1 L bottles (minimum 1).

Filler (kg) = Wall area × Rate by condition × Wastage

Caulk cartridges = (Caulk length + window/door perimeter) ÷ 12 m per cartridge

Sandpaper sheets = Wall area ÷ 2 m² per sheet

For example, a room with 40 m² walls and 12 m² ceiling in fair condition, at 15% wastage: sugar soap solution = 52 × 0.1 × 1.15 ≈ 5.98 L, which needs 5.98 × (125 ÷ 4500) ≈ 0.17 L of concentrate — so just 1 × 1 L bottle. Filler = 40 × 0.08 × 1.15 ≈ 3.68 kg (4 tubs). Sandpaper = 40 ÷ 2 = 20 sheets.

Why so little concentrate?

Liquid sugar soap is sold as a concentrate that you dilute heavily — Bartoline’s data sheet specifies about 125 ml per 4.5 L of water. One 1 L bottle therefore makes roughly 36 L of working solution, enough to clean several hundred square metres. Always follow your own product’s label, as ratios vary between brands.

Filler rates by condition

Estimating rules of thumb for spot-filling cracks and holes — not manufacturer coverage figures (a full 5 mm skim is roughly 1 m²/kg):

  • Good: 0.02 kg/m² — a few nail holes only
  • Fair: 0.08 kg/m² — some cracks and dents
  • Poor: 0.20 kg/m² — extensive cracking and damage
