How We Calculate This

This calculator estimates the number of scaffold ties from a grid spacing you choose. It divides the scaffold length by the horizontal tie spacing and the height by the vertical tie spacing, rounds each up, and multiplies. It is an estimating aid — the definitive tie pattern for any scaffold comes from the relevant TG20:21 compliance sheet, or a bespoke design where the scaffold falls outside TG20.

Grid spacing used

  • Unsheeted (default): 4m horizontal × 4m vertical (adjustable)
  • Sheeted/netted: tightened to 2.5m — indicative only; requires a specific wind-load design
  • First tie: place a tie near each scaffold end

TG20 tie duty classes

  • Light duty: 3.5 kN working load (in tension)
  • Standard duty: 6.1 kN working load
  • Heavy duty: 12.2 kN working load
  • Through ties are the preferred method; reveal ties are friction-based and capped at 50% of ties per facade; drilled anchor ties have no default SWL and must be proof tested on site per NASC TG4:19.
