This calculator estimates the maximum height for a mobile tower scaffold from the base dimensions and location using the legacy aluminium-tower rule of thumb. This ratio is a long-standing HSE/manufacturer convention — it is not a clause in BS EN 1004-1:2020, which sizes towers by tested manufacturer configuration (up to 12m platform indoors / 8m outdoors). Height-to-base ratio (rule of thumb)

  • Indoor: Maximum 3.5:1 (height ÷ smallest base dimension)
  • Outdoor: Maximum 3:1 (more restrictive due to wind)
  • With stabilisers: Effective base enlarged by stabiliser reach — the calculator gives an indicative geometric estimate; real stabilised heights (commonly 8–12m) come from the manufacturer’s schedule
