Concrete Grade Calculator — BS 8500 Specification

Find the correct concrete grade, designation, slump class and cement content for your application. Based on BS 8500-1:2023 and BS EN 206.

How We Calculate This

This calculator recommends a concrete grade and mix designation based on BS 8500-1:2023 (Concrete — Complementary British Standard to BS EN 206). It considers the application type, environmental exposure class, and expected loading.

Exposure classes (BS 8500)

  • XC1: Dry or permanently wet — internal concrete
  • XC2: Wet, rarely dry — foundations, buried concrete
  • XC3-XC4: Moderate to severe carbonation risk — external concrete
  • XF1-XF4: Freeze/thaw exposure — outdoor paving and structures

Key parameters

  • Grade: Characteristic strength at 28 days (cylinder/cube)
  • Designation: BS 8500 mix type (GEN, ST, RC, PAV, FND)
  • Slump class: Workability measure (S1 stiff to S4 flowing)
  • Cement content: Typical cement content per m³ (a conservative working figure; check the supplier mix or BS 8500 durability tables for the exact limiting minimum)
  • W/C ratio: Maximum water/cement ratio for durability
