How We Calculate This

This calculator determines concrete volume, formwork area and reinforcement weight for in-situ cast concrete stairs.

Concrete volume

Waist Volume = Flight Length × Width × Waist Thickness
Step Volume = Treads × Width × Going × Rise / 2
Total = Waist + Steps

The step count shown is the number of risers (height ÷ rise, rounded up). The number of treads is one fewer (the top riser lands on the upper floor, so there is no separate tread above it), so the step-triangle volume uses Treads = Steps − 1.

Formwork

Formwork area = soffit (underside) + side strings + riser boards. Rebar is estimated from an indicative density of 60-100 kg per m³ of concrete (default 80 kg/m³). This is an estimating rule of thumb only — the actual reinforcement must follow a structural engineer’s design to BS EN 1992-1-1 (Eurocode 2).
