Rainwater Harvesting Tank Calculator

Size a rainwater tank from roof area, rainfall, and demand

How We Calculate This

Enter your roof collection area, roof material (which sets the run-off / yield coefficient — 0.80 for a pitched tiled or slate roof, 0.90 for smooth metal, 0.50 for smooth flat felt, 0.40 for a green roof) and UK region (which sets the regional annual rainfall). The calculator works out the annual rainwater yield as roof area × rainfall × yield coefficient × filter efficiency (0.90, per BS EN 16941-1:2024). Enter the non-potable demand per person and number of occupants to get annual demand. Following the BS EN 16941-1:2024 basic approach (equivalent to the intermediate approach in the withdrawn BS 8515), the recommended tank is 5% of the lesser of annual yield or annual demand — larger tanks are discouraged to avoid stagnation. A days-of-demand buffer is shown alongside as a secondary cross-check only.
