How We Calculate This

Enter the room volume, ceiling height, internal and external temperatures, and the stack height (vertical distance between the low and high openings). For stack effect the calculator uses Qs = Cd × A × √(2gH × ΔT/Ti), where Ti is the indoor absolute temperature (EnergyPlus / ASHRAE Fundamentals). For wind-driven cross ventilation it uses Qw = Cw × A × V, where Cw is the single opening-effectiveness coefficient (0.55 for perpendicular winds), so the discharge coefficient is not double-counted. In combined mode the two driver flows add in quadrature, Q = √(Qs² + Qw²). The required opening area is shown with the achievable air changes per hour and the opening as a percentage of floor area (floor area = volume ÷ ceiling height).
