How We Calculate This

This calculator determines fire safety requirements for habitable basements per Approved Document B (Fire Safety) of the Building Regulations. Basement fire safety is critical because escape is upward, against the natural direction of smoke and fire spread.

Key requirements

Protected stairway: A fire-rated enclosure providing escape from basement to final exit. Required for all habitable basements.

FD30S doors: 30-minute fire-rated, self-closing doors at all openings to the protected stairway. Fitted with intumescent strips and smoke seals.

Detection: Interlinked smoke detection on every level (mains powered with battery backup per BS 5839-6). Heat detectors in kitchen areas.

Travel distance: Maximum travel distance to the stairway should not exceed 9m in a single-direction escape or 18m where alternative routes exist.
