This calculator estimates waste quantities and labour for ceiling removal, accounting for the significant difference in weight and volume between modern plasterboard and traditional lath-and-plaster ceilings.
Weight comparison
Plasterboard: ~10 kg/m² (12.5mm board with skim coat).
Lath-and-plaster: ~35 kg/m² (timber laths + 20-25mm lime plaster). This is ~3.5× heavier than plasterboard and produces much bulkier waste due to the mix of timber laths and plaster.
Suspended tiles: ~5 kg/m² (lightweight mineral fibre or vinyl tiles in a metal grid system).
Waste volume
The same 1.3× bulking factor is applied to every ceiling type, because demolished material does not stack neatly. What varies by type is the assumed solid debris depth (plasterboard ~15mm, artex ~18mm, suspended ~25mm, lath-and-plaster ~40mm). Lath-and-plaster produces the most volume not because of a bigger bulking factor but because its laths plus 20-35mm of plaster make the thickest debris.
Labour, skips and disposal
Labour hours use indicative strip-out productivity (about 0.15 hr/m² for plasterboard, 0.3 hr/m² for lath-and-plaster, 0.2 for artex, 0.08 for suspended tiles). There is no governing standard for these — they are typical trade estimates that vary with access and ceiling height, so treat the result as a starting point.
The skip count is volume-basedand assumes a mixed-waste skip filled to its nominal capacity (6-yard ≈ 4.6 m³, 8-yard ≈ 6.1 m³, 12-yard ≈ 9.2 m³). For dense plaster and rubble the skip’s weight limit often binds first — an 8-yard skip is usually capped around 8 tonnes and heavy rubble can hit that before the skip is full, so do not fill a builder skip to the brim with plaster. Plasterboard must not be mixed with other waste: gypsum has been banned from mixed landfill and must be segregated at source (in force since 1 April 2009), so use a dedicated plasterboard skip or bag for board offcuts.

Lath-and-plaster ceilings are roughly 3 to 4 times heavier than plasterboard — this calculator uses ~3.5×. A plasterboard ceiling weighs around 10 kg/m² (board plus skim), while traditional lath-and-plaster weighs 30-40 kg/m² including the timber laths, lime plaster, and horsehair reinforcement. A 15m² room ceiling in lath-and-plaster produces around 525 kg of waste (at 35 kg/m²) compared to 150 kg for plasterboard. These are typical dead-load figures; thicker or multi-coat lime plaster can be heavier still.
Yes, especially for ceilings with textured coatings (Artex) applied before 2000, which may contain chrysotile (white asbestos — banned in the UK in 1999, but products were in use to around 2000). Asbestos insulating board (AIB) was also used in some ceiling panels. Have suspect materials tested before removal. Under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 the analysis must be done by a UKAS-accredited laboratory; a bulk sample typically costs around £25-£45 per sample (plus VAT).
Cover the entire floor with heavy-duty dust sheets (1000-gauge polythene or cotton twill). Seal doorways with polythene sheeting and tape. Remove all furniture or cover with plastic sheeting. Ceiling removal is one of the dustiest demolition tasks — an FFP3 dust mask, goggles, and a dehumidifier or air scrubber are essential.
Yes, plasterboard is recyclable but must be kept separate from general waste. Under UK regulations, plasterboard cannot go to mixed waste landfill due to its gypsum content which can produce hydrogen sulphide gas. Many skip companies now offer dedicated plasterboard skips or bags at a lower disposal rate than mixed waste.
As a typical guide, plasterboard ceiling removal takes around 0.15 hours per m² (a 15m² room in about 2-3 hours). Lath-and-plaster takes roughly double — about 0.3 hours per m² — due to the difficulty of removing the laths and heavier plaster. These are indicative trade estimates only — actual times vary with ceiling height, access, fixing method and how friable the plaster is. Add time for dust sheet setup, cleanup, and waste removal to the skip.
