This calculator estimates the materials, temporary supports, and waste quantities for internal wall removal. It covers both load-bearing walls (requiring RSJ support) and non-load-bearing partition walls.
Calculation method
Wall volume: Length × height × thickness. One-brick walls (215mm) are the most common load-bearing internal walls in UK houses.
RSJ sizing: The indicative beam is a rule of thumb keyed to span only, offered as a rough starting point — it is not a code-derived size. A beam is actually sized by the total load it carries (floors, roof and any masonry above), so the same span can need very different beams. The mass-per-metre shown is the third figure of each Universal Beam designation (e.g. 203×133×25 UB = 25.1 kg/m, per the British Steel Universal Beams datasheet). The replacement beam must be designed and confirmed by a structural engineer, who will assess imposed loads (UK NA to BS EN 1991-1-1 gives 1.5 kN/m² for Category A domestic floors) together with dead and any roof/wall loads.
