Data Cabling Calculator — CAT6/6A Structured Cabling

Calculate cable quantities, patch panel count, and verify permanent link distances for structured cabling installations per BS EN 50173 and ISO/IEC 11801.

Total data outlets to install

Patch panel to outlet — permanent link (max 90m for CAT6A)

Safety notice

Electrical work in dwellings can be notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations. Treat these figures as planning guidance only: circuits must be designed, installed and certified to BS 7671 by a competent person, normally a registered electrician.

How We Calculate This

This calculator estimates cable quantities and infrastructure requirements for structured data cabling installations per BS EN 50173.

Calculation

Total cable = Outlets × (Avg run + Service loops) × (1 + Waste%)

Key Standards

  • Permanent link (CAT5e/6/6A/7): Max 90m horizontal cable
  • Channel (CAT5e/6/6A/7): Max 100m including patch cables
  • CAT8: Max 24m permanent link / 30m channel (25/40GBASE-T, data-centre short reach)
  • CAT6: 1 Gbps at 250MHz
  • CAT6A: 10 Gbps at 500MHz (recommended)
  • Cable boxes: Standard 305m (1,000ft) per box
  • Segregation: 200mm from unscreened power cables (BS EN 50174-2)

Permanent-link and channel limits per ISO/IEC 11801-1 and ANSI/TIA-568.2-1.
