How We Calculate This

This calculator estimates solar PV system size and annual energy yield based on your roof area, orientation, pitch, and UK regional solar irradiation data.

Calculation Method

We follow the MCS method (MIS 3002, the UK Solar PV Installation Standard):

Annual yield = kWp × Kk (regional specific yield) × Orientation factor × Shading factor

The Kk specific-yield figures below are derived from PVGIS irradiance data and are already net of the standard ~0.8 performance ratio (inverter, wiring, temperature and soiling losses). Because those losses are baked into Kk, we do not apply a separate percentage system-loss derate on top — doing so would double-count losses and under-state generation.

UK Regional Yields (kWh/kWp/year, due-south optimal)

  • South England: 1,050 kWh/kWp
  • Midlands: 950 kWh/kWp
  • North England: 880 kWh/kWp
  • Scotland (south): 850 kWh/kWp
  • Scotland (north): 800 kWh/kWp

Savings assume your chosen self-consumption share at the Ofgem cap import rate (26.11p/kWh, Jul–Sep 2026) and export at the Smart Export Guarantee rate (Ofgem 2024-25 average 13p/kWh; the best fixed no-battery tariffs are around 15p). CO₂ displaced uses the DESNZ/Defra 2025 grid generation factor of 0.177 kgCO₂e/kWh.
