How We Calculate This

This calculator checks key means of escape parameters against Approved Document B requirements, covering travel distances, corridor and stairway widths, inner rooms and dead-end corridors.

How it works

  • Travel distance: Checked against AD B Vol 2 Table 2.1 (non-dwellings) or AD B Vol 1 Table 3.1 (common areas of flats), by building type and escape directions.
  • Corridor width: AD B Vol 2 Table 2.3, based on the occupancy served.
  • Stairway: Minimum width from AD B Vol 2 Table 3.1; number of escape routes from Table 2.2.
  • Inner rooms / dead ends: Checked against AD B Section 2 and para 2.28.

Key standards

  • Approved Document B: Section 2 — Means of escape
  • BS 9991: Residential building fire safety
