How We Calculate This

This calculator estimates the required glass thickness, number of plies, weight and cost for structural glass applications.

The formula

Weight = Panel area × Total thickness × 2.5 kg/m²/mm

  • Floors: 3-ply ~33mm (domestic/office) or 4-ply ~52mm (retail/assembly) laminated
  • Beams/fins: typically 3-ply laminated
  • Roofs/canopies: minimum 2-ply laminated (overhead post-breakage retention)
  • SGP interlayer recommended for structural applications

Imposed loads follow the UK National Annex to BS EN 1991-1-1 Table NA.3 (Cat A residential 1.5, Cat B office 2.5, Cat D shopping 4.0, Cat C5 large crowds 5.0 kN/m²). Thicknesses shown are typical build-ups, not a substitute for a structural calculation — glass thickness rises with the unsupported span, so a chartered engineer must confirm the specification.
