How We Calculate This

Select the hazardous substance to look up its Workplace Exposure Limit (WEL) from HSE EH40/2005, or enter a custom value from the product's safety data sheet. Input your estimated airborne concentration and exposure duration. The calculator computes the 8-hour time-weighted average (TWA) exposure (a 4-hour TWA for asbestos), applies the RPE Assigned Protection Factor if selected, and compares the result against the WEL to determine compliance. It rounds the required protection up to the next real RPE class (APF 10/20/40), and applies the HSE Construction Information Sheet CIS36 floor: silica, hardwood and cement/concrete dust always require a minimum of FFP3 (APF 20), never FFP2, regardless of the bare arithmetic. Powered RPE is listed by device class rather than as a single option, because HSG53 (Fourth edition) Figures 13 and 14 assign powered devices three different protection factors (TH1/TM1 10, TH2/TM2 20, TH3/TM3 40) and CIS36 Table 2 names a TH2 at APF 20 as the powered option for construction dust. Optionally enter a 15-minute peak level to check it against the short-term exposure limit (STEL). Asbestos is handled separately: the tool surfaces the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 requirements instead of a simple APF check, because most asbestos work is licensed and demands enclosure, air monitoring and RPE selected from the expected exposure.
