Noise Exposure Calculator

Calculate daily noise exposure (LEP,d) and check against HSE action levels

How We Calculate This

Select a tool type (or enter a custom dB level — the at-ear LAeq, which already includes background noise) and the duration of use. The calculator computes the daily personal noise exposure LEP,d using LEP,d = LAeq + 10·log10(T/8) and compares it against the UK Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005. Per Reg 4(5), the 80 and 85 dB(A) action values are judged on the unprotected LEP,d, while the 87 dB(A) exposure limit value is judged at the ear after hearing protection. If an SNR is entered, the HSE real-world reduction (SNR minus 4 dB, e.g. SNR 30 → 26 dB effective) is applied to give the protected level used for the 87 dB limit check.
