How We Calculate This

This calculator sizes a biomass boiler based on your property heat loss and estimates annual fuel consumption, storage requirements, and running costs compared to gas.

Fuel energy content

Net (lower) calorific values from Forest Research, “Typical calorific values of fuels”:

  • Wood pellets: ~4,800 kWh/tonne (17 GJ/t = 4.8 kWh/kg at 10% moisture; ENplus A1 guarantees ≥4,600)
  • Wood chip: ~3,500 kWh/tonne (12.5 GJ/t = 3.5 kWh/kg at 30% moisture)
  • Logs: ~4,100 kWh/tonne (14.7 GJ/t = 4.1 kWh/kg at 20% moisture, seasoned)

Flue sizing

Flue diameter is set by the boiler manufacturer (Approved Document J does not specify diameters). Doc J and the BFCMA cite a chimney height of about 4.5m as a rule of thumb for adequate draught (~10 Pa); the terminal must also meet Doc J's outlet geometry. Always confirm against the manufacturer's instructions and Approved Document J.

Cost and CO2 comparison

The gas comparison uses the editable gas price (default 7.33p/kWh, the Ofgem cap for 1 July–30 September 2026) and assumes an existing ~85% non-condensing gas boiler; a new condensing boiler is ~90%. The CO2 saving counts only the non-biogenic supply/transport burden of biomass (~0.03 kgCO2/kWh) against natural gas (0.18296 kgCO2e/kWh, DESNZ 2025) — biogenic combustion CO2 is reported “outside scopes” per DEFRA/DESNZ.
