What is the difference between a scissor lift and a boom lift?

Scissor lifts raise the platform vertically only — no horizontal outreach. They offer large platform areas (good for 2+ people) and high load capacity (350-700kg). Boom lifts (articulating or telescopic) provide both vertical and horizontal reach, allowing access to difficult positions. Boom platforms are smaller (1-2 person, 230kg typical) but can reach over obstacles.

What IPAF licence do I need?

IPAF (International Powered Access Federation) categories: 3a — scissor lifts (vertical only, static). 3b — boom lifts (self-propelled booms). 1b — push-around scissor lifts. Most hire companies require a valid IPAF PAL card for the machine category. The course is 1 day. Under LOLER, operators must be competent — IPAF training demonstrates competence.

Can I use a MEWP on soft ground?

MEWPs require firm, level ground. On soft ground, you must use spreader plates (typically 1m × 1m × 25mm steel plates or timber mats) to reduce ground pressure. Check the machine's ground bearing pressure against the soil capacity. Tracked MEWPs and spider booms are designed for soft ground with lower ground pressure. Never operate on slopes beyond the machine's rated limit.

What access width do I need for a MEWP?

Compact electric scissor lifts can fit through a standard single door (762mm). Standard scissor lifts are 1.2-1.8m wide. Boom lifts range from 1.5m (compact) to 2.5m (large telescopic). For site access, consider the transport width plus turning space. Narrow-aisle scissor lifts (680mm wide) are available for very restricted access.

How much does it cost to hire a MEWP?

UK hire rates (2025-2026): electric scissor lift (6-8m) from £150-250/week. Diesel scissor lift (10-15m) from £350-600/week. Articulating boom (12-18m) from £500-900/week. Telescopic boom (20-30m) from £800-1,500/week. Delivery and collection is extra (typically £100-300). Weekly hire is much cheaper than daily rates.
