MEWP Selection Calculator — Scissor Lift & Boom Selection

Select the right mobile elevating work platform (MEWP) for your task. Compares scissor lifts and boom lifts by working height, reach, capacity, and ground conditions.

How We Calculate This

This calculator recommends a MEWP type based on your working height, horizontal reach requirement, and ground conditions. It gives a first-pass, indicative ground-bearing screen from the machine weight — not a substitute for the proper point-load assessment.

Selection logic

  • Scissor lift: Vertical access only, up to 18m, high capacity
  • Articulating boom: Up to 22m height, 12m reach, over-obstacles
  • Telescopic boom: Up to 43m height, 25m reach, maximum outreach
  • Ground check (indicative): machine weight ÷ assumed chassis area gives an average bearing estimate for first-pass screening only — see the caveat below

Ground-bearing caveat

The ground-bearing figure is an indicative average pressure (machine weight spread over an assumed chassis plan area). It is not the design check. Real MEWP ground loading is governed by the maximum wheel or outrigger point load over a small contact patch, which is typically several times higher than the average. For the actual ground assessment, use the machine’s maximum wheel/axle load and the IPAF Spreader Pad Calculator, in line with IPAF’s guidance on the assessment of ground conditions.
