This calculator checks your proposed en-suite dimensions against recommended best-practice minimums for different bathroom configurations, including fixture sizes, clearances and door swing. These are design conventions, not regulatory minimums.
The formula
Room area = Length × Width ≥ Recommended minimum area for layout type
Each dimension must also meet the recommended minimum individually. For a shower-only en-suite: length ≥ 1700mm, width ≥ 1200mm, area ≥ 2.04 m².

These room sizes are best-practice layout conventions for UK residential bathroom design — there is no UK building regulation that sets a minimum en-suite room size. They are built up from the per-appliance plan sizes and activity spaces recommended in BS 6465-2:2017 (for example WC activity 600×800mm, basin 700×600mm, shower 900×700mm, bath 1700×800mm), with allowances for circulation. BS 6465-2 recommends spaces per appliance but deliberately does not set minimum room dimensions, so treat a “meets minimum” result as good-practice guidance rather than a compliance certificate.
Frequently Asked Questions
A shower-only en-suite with WC and basin needs a recommended minimum of approximately 1.2m × 1.7m (2.04 m²) for a workable layout. This is a best-practice convention, not a regulatory minimum — UK Building Regulations do not set a minimum bathroom size. It assumes an 800mm shower enclosure, 400mm WC and 450mm basin arranged efficiently. In practice, 1.5m × 2.0m (3 m²) gives a much more comfortable layout with proper clearances.
A standard 1700mm bath sits comfortably in an en-suite of about 2.2m × 1.6m (3.52 m²) when combined with a WC and basin — a recommended layout minimum rather than a legal one. A shorter 1500mm bath can work in smaller spaces. If you want a separate shower and bath, plan for at least 2.8m × 1.8m (5.04 m²). Consider a shower-over-bath arrangement to save space.
Sliding or pocket doors are ideal for small en-suites as they don't consume any floor space when open. Bi-fold doors are the next best option. An outward-opening door works well if there is hallway space. Avoid inward-opening doors in small en-suites as the door swing takes up valuable floor area and may clash with fixtures.
Yes. Under Part F 2021 (Approved Document F Volume 1) of the Building Regulations, all bathrooms require ventilation. An en-suite with a window needs an openable purge area of at least 1/20th of the floor area (ADF 2021 Vol 1 Table 1.4) plus 4000 mm² background ventilation (ADF 2021 Vol 1 Table 1.7, bathroom). Without a window, you need mechanical extract ventilation at 15 L/s intermittent or 8 L/s continuous.
There is no fixed minimum bathroom ceiling height in the Building Regulations for England and Wales. In practice, around 2100mm of headroom over a standing shower is a sensible comfort minimum, and 2000mm is the hard minimum over stairs and at the head of a loft staircase (Approved Document K). In loft conversions where ceiling height varies, position the shower and WC under the highest point. Factor in floor build-up (tiles, screed, underfloor heating) which can reduce finished headroom by 25-75mm — this calculator subtracts your build-up from the ceiling height before checking the 2100mm comfort figure.
