How We Calculate This

This calculator checks your proposed en-suite dimensions against minimum requirements for different bathroom configurations, including fixture sizes, clearances and door swing.

The formula

Room area = Length × Width ≥ Minimum area for layout type

Each dimension must also meet the minimum individually. For a shower-only en-suite: length ≥ 1700mm, width ≥ 1200mm, area ≥ 2.04 m².

Minimum dimensions by type

  • Shower, WC & Basin: 1200mm × 1700mm (2.04 m²)
  • Bath/Shower Over, WC & Basin: 1600mm × 2200mm (3.52 m²)
  • Full (separate shower & bath): 1800mm × 2800mm (5.04 m²)
  • Wet Room, WC & Basin: 1400mm × 1800mm (2.52 m²)

Based on BS 6465-2, Approved Document M and industry best practice for UK residential bathroom design.
