Fire safety measures must satisfy Approved Document B and often need building control approval. Confirm the final specification with building control or a fire engineer before relying on it.

How We Calculate This

This calculator applies the two simple methods in Approved Document B Vol 1 (paragraphs 11.16–11.21) to check whether the unprotected area on a facade complies with the boundary distance requirements. Both methods apply only to walls a minimum of 1m (1000mm) from the relevant boundary.

Method 1 — Diagram 11.7 (residential)

  • Who: small residential buildings — flats and dwellinghouses up to 3 storeys (excluding basements) or 24m per side.
  • Limit: an absolute maximum unprotected AREA in m² — 5.6 m² at 1m, 12 m² at 2m, 18 m² at 3m, 24 m² at 4m, 30 m² at 5m, no limit at 6m or more (interpolate between values).

Method 2 — Table 11.1 (other small buildings)

  • Who: buildings or compartments up to 10m high for which Method 1 is not appropriate.
  • Enclosing rectangle: width × height of the smallest rectangle enclosing all unprotected areas.
  • Unprotected percentage: total unprotected area ÷ enclosing rectangle area × 100.
  • Table 11.1 lookup: maximum permitted PERCENTAGE by boundary distance (4% under 1m; 8% at 1m, 20% at 2.5m, 40% at 5m, 60% at 7.5m, 80% at 10m, 100% at 12.5m — interpolate).

Sprinklers (para 11.21): a system to Appendix E lets you double the permitted unprotected area, or halve the boundary distance (minimum 1m). For taller buildings or precise design, use the full BR 187 enclosing-rectangle procedure. The Table 11.1 percentages are not adjusted by purpose group — that distinction (84 vs 168 kW/m² radiation in para 11.16) only affects a full BR 187 calculation.
