How We Calculate This

This calculator determines the wall construction specification needed to achieve a target fire resistance rating, based on construction type, material properties and plasterboard selection.

How it works

  • Blockwork: Thickness and density determine fire rating per BS EN 1996-1-2.
  • Stud walls: Plasterboard layers determine the rating. Per the generic LABC Warranty Technical Manual Table 7.2.3, a single 12.5mm board each side of the framing gives ½ hour (30 min) and two layers each side give 1 hour (60 min); 90 min+ uses a manufacturer tested FireLine detail. Always follow the specific tested specification for fire-rated partitions.
  • Concrete: Thickness and cover determine rating per BS EN 1992-1-2.
  • Insulation: Mineral wool in cavities improves stud wall performance.
