How We Calculate This

This calculator checks whether a window meets the emergency egress requirements of Approved Document B, Volume 1 (Dwellings). It calculates the clear opening dimensions based on window type and checks against the minimum requirements for width, height, area and sill height.

How it works

  • Clear opening: The actual unobstructed opening size is calculated based on window type. Side-hung casements provide full clear opening; sliding sash windows provide half the overall height; top-hung windows are restricted by opening angle.
  • Minimum requirements: AD B requires minimum 450mm width, 450mm height and 0.33 m² clear area — all three must be met simultaneously.
  • Sill height: Maximum 1100mm above floor level to allow easy access during emergency egress.
  • Floor level: Escape windows are only effective up to 4.5m drop height (approximately second floor). Higher floors need protected escape routes.
