What welfare facilities are required on site?

CDM 2015 Schedule 2 requires: sanitary conveniences (toilets), washing facilities with hot and cold water, drinking water, rest facilities with seating and means to heat food, changing/drying facilities where needed, and adequate lighting and ventilation in all welfare areas.

How many toilets are needed?

The general guideline is 1 toilet per 7 workers. For mixed-gender sites, separate facilities for women must be provided. Chemical toilets are acceptable for short-term or remote sites, but flushing toilets connected to drains are preferred for longer projects.

When are drying facilities needed?

Drying facilities should be provided on projects lasting more than 2 weeks, especially during autumn/winter. Workers need somewhere to dry wet clothing. A heated space with hanging rails is sufficient. This is particularly important for outdoor trades.

What first aid is required on construction sites?

Under the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981: sites with fewer than 5 workers need a first aid kit and an appointed person. Sites with 5-50 workers need a trained first aider. Larger sites need 1 first aider per 50 workers. High-risk construction sites may need more.

Who is responsible for welfare provision?

Under CDM 2015, the principal contractor must ensure adequate welfare facilities are provided from the start of the construction phase. The client must also ensure arrangements are in place. On single-contractor projects, the contractor has this duty.
