How We Calculate This

This calculator estimates the materials needed for a hip-to-gable conversion based on the gable dimensions.

The formula

Gable Wall Area = (Width × Height) / 2 × Number of Sides

Bricks = Area × 60 bricks/m² × 1.10 (10% waste)

Tile-hung plain tiles (if Gable Wall Finish is Tile-hung blockwork) = Area × 53 tiles/m² (BS 5534 vertical)

New Rafters = ceil(Ridge Extension / 0.4m spacing) × Number of Sides

Worked example

Gable Width 6m, Gable Height 3m, Ridge Extension 4m, Number of Sides 1 (a single hipped side, typical for a semi-detached house):

  • Gable wall area = (6 × 3) / 2 × 1 = 9 m²
  • Bricks = 9 × 60 × 1.10 = 594 bricks
  • New rafters = ceil(4 / 0.4) × 1 = 10 rafters
  • Volume added = 9 × (4 / 3) × 1 = 12 m³

The volume figure tapers the full gable cross-section down to a point at the old hip apex over the ridge-extension distance, the same base-area-times-a-third-of-length approximation used for a pyramid. 12 m³ is comfortably within the 50 m³ Permitted Development limit for a semi-detached house (24% of the allowance, GPDO 2015 Schedule 2 Part 1 Class B.1(d)).
