How We Calculate This

This calculator determines the boarding and materials needed to upgrade a loft party wall for fire and sound compliance.

The formula

Wall Area = Length × Height

Fire Board Sheets = ceil(Area / 2.88) × Layers

Acoustic Sealant = Perimeter × 2 sides

Part E & B requirements

  • Part E (sound): 45 dB DnT,w + Ctr airborne, field-measured, for a new separating wall (Table 1a); 43 dB for a material change of use such as flats (Table 1b). Internal walls use 40 dB Rw.
  • Part B (fire): 60-minute (REI 60) separating wall between dwellings; new loft floor and stair enclosure 30 minutes
  • Fire board: 2 × 15mm Type F (e.g. Gyproc FireLine) each side for the 60-minute class, joints staggered
  • Acoustic: 100mm Rockwool RWA45 slab (2.88 m²/pack) in the cavity, plus acoustic board and resilient-bar option; seal all flanking joints

Quantities assume 2.4×1.2m (2.88 m²) boards and 100mm RWA45 slab packs. The dB figure is a performance target — achieving it on site depends on flanking detailing and sealing, so always pre-completion test where required.
