Part G Water Calculator — AD G Appendix A Water Efficiency

Run the statutory water efficiency calculation for a new dwelling: Approved Document G Appendix A Table A1, checked against the 125 or 110 litres per person per day requirement. G2 water efficiency only, nothing about hot water.

Taps other than kitchen and utility, averaged across them all. Bath taps are excluded: that water sits inside the bath use factor.

How We Calculate This

This page performs the calculation that regulation 36 requires: Approved Document G, Appendix A, Table A1, the water efficiency calculator. It is the methodology approved by the Secretary of State, so the figure it produces is the one a building control body is looking for.

Every row works the same way

Litres per person per day = (unit of measure x use factor) + fixed use. The use factors belong to Table A1 and are not adjustable:

  • WC, dual flush: full flush volume x 1.46, plus part flush volume x 2.96
  • WC, single flush: flush volume x 4.42
  • Taps other than kitchen and utility taps: flow rate x 1.58, plus a fixed 1.58
  • Bath where a shower is also present: capacity to overflow x 0.11. Bath only: x 0.50
  • Shower where a bath is also present: flow rate x 4.37. Shower only: x 5.60
  • WCs, multiple fittings: average effective flushing volume x 4.42
  • Kitchen or utility sink taps: flow rate x 0.44, plus a fixed 10.36
  • Washing machine: litres per kg of dry load x 2.1
  • Dishwasher: litres per place setting x 3.6
  • Waste disposal unit: 1 if present, 0 if absent, x 3.08

Then the two steps people forget

Those rows add up to the total calculated use, Table A1 row (5). That total is multiplied by the normalisation factor of 0.91, row (8), giving row (9). A fixed 5.0 litres per person per day for external water use is then added, row (10), giving the row (11) total that is compared with the requirement. Paragraph 2.3 says the target includes a fixed factor of water for outdoor use of 5 litres/person/day, so the allowance is inside the 125, not on top of it.

Rounding follows paragraph A5: two decimal places for every fitting row, one decimal place for the total consumption figures.

Why there is no occupancy input

Table A1 column (4) is headed "Litres/person/day = [(1) x (2)] + (3)", so every fitting row is already per person and household size plays no part in it. Any water calculator that divides that total by the number of occupants is not running the approved method. Occupancy is not absent from Appendix A altogether, and an earlier version of this page wrongly said it appeared once: it is box (d) of Table A3 for water softeners, box (e) of Table A5.1 and box (b) of Table A5.2 for rainwater, where the daily collection is divided by it. All three are tables this page does not model, and in all three it is a bedroom count.

What this page does not model

Three things, and they pull in opposite directions. The water softener row is a FITTING row, so leaving it out only ever makes the answer look better than it is; its litres per person per day come from Table A3, which needs the percentage of total capacity used per regeneration, the litres consumed per regeneration, the cycles per day and an occupancy count. Greywater and rainwater are rows (6) and (7), and they are SUBTRACTED from the total, so treating them as zero is the cautious direction. Where any of the three applies, complete the full Appendix A tables. Bidets, bath taps, external taps, swimming pools and spa hot tubs are excluded by Appendix A itself, not by this page.

Several fittings of the same type

Where a dwelling has more than one fitting of a type at different flow rates, for example separate hot and cold taps or two showers, Appendix A wants a single averaged figure, and Tables A2.1 to A2.6 are how you work it out. Do that first and enter the average here. Watch paragraph A9 while you do: box (f) of each of those tables takes the highest flow rate or volume in the set and multiplies it by 0.7, and where the average comes out below that proportionate figure, the proportionate figure must be entered instead. That stops one ultra low fitting dragging an average down.

WCs are the exception, and the exception is explicit. Paragraph A8 disapplies both of those steps for them, twice: at (e), "Enter the flow rate/volume of the fitting with the highest flow rate/volume into box (f) with the exception of WCs, where this step is not relevant", and at (f) the same wording again on the 0.7 factor. Table A2.7, the WC table, has no box (f) printed in it at all, so there is no 70 per cent rule to watch. What A11 asks for instead is the AVERAGE EFFECTIVE FLUSHING VOLUME, entered into the separate Table A1 row "WCs (multiple fittings)" at use factor 4.42. The Table A2.7 footnote defines the effective flushing volume of a dual flush WC as (full flushing volume x 0.33) + (part flushing volume x 0.67), so a 4/2.6 pan is 3.06 litres and a 6/4 pan is 4.66 litres, and one of each averages 3.86. Select "More than one WC type" above and enter that average: it runs the 4.42 row rather than the 1.46 and 2.96 pair, which is what the document requires and is not the same arithmetic.
