What scaffold load class do I need for bricklaying?

Bricklaying requires Load Class 3 (general purpose), which allows 2.0 kN/m² imposed load. This accommodates the weight of bricklayers, mortar tubs, and a reasonable stock of bricks on the platform. The platform must be at least 4 boards wide (900mm) with transoms at 600mm maximum centres. If storing large quantities of bricks, Class 4 (3.0 kN/m²) may be needed.

What are the six scaffold load classes?

BS EN 12811-1 defines six load classes: Class 1 (0.75 kN/m²) — inspection only. Class 2 (1.5 kN/m²) — painting, light work. Class 3 (2.0 kN/m²) — bricklaying, rendering. Class 4 (3.0 kN/m²) — blockwork, heavy cladding. Class 5 (4.5 kN/m²) — stone masonry. Class 6 (6.0 kN/m²) — special heavy duty. Most domestic scaffolding is Class 2 or 3.

What is transom spacing and why does it matter?

Transoms are the horizontal tubes that sit across the scaffold and support the boards. Spacing affects the board's ability to carry load without excessive deflection. For Load Class 1-2: transoms at 1200mm (1.2m) maximum. For Class 3-5: 600mm maximum. For Class 6: 450mm. Closer transom spacing increases the load capacity of the platform.

How many scaffold boards do I need for different trades?

Minimum platform widths per TG20: 3 boards (675mm) for inspection and access only. 4 boards (900mm) for painting and light duty. 5 boards (1125mm) for bricklaying and general purpose — this allows space for a mortar tub and working area. For stone masonry or heavy work, 5+ boards with additional boards for material storage.

Can I store materials on a scaffold platform?

Yes, but within the load class limits. Materials should be evenly distributed, not concentrated in one spot. Never exceed the platform's rated capacity. For bricklaying (Class 3), limit brick stacks to 3-4 courses high. Heavy items like lintels should be placed directly over transoms. TG20 requires that the total imposed load including workers and materials does not exceed the class limit.
