What is the maximum weight one person can lift?

There is no single legal maximum weight. The HSE guideline for ideal conditions (close to body, waist height, good grip) is 25kg for men and 16kg for women. This reduces significantly with poor posture, distance from body, frequency, and carrying distance.

When is a team lift required?

A team lift should be considered when the load exceeds the individual guideline weight (25kg at waist height), is awkward to grip, or is bulky. Remember that two people do not double the capacity - a two-person team can safely handle roughly 1.6x the individual limit due to coordination factors.

What does the Manual Handling Regulations require?

The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 require employers to: avoid hazardous manual handling where reasonably practicable, assess any remaining hazardous operations, reduce the risk as far as reasonably practicable, and provide information on the weight and centre of gravity of loads.

How does posture affect safe lifting weight?

The guideline weight reduces dramatically with poor posture: at arm's length it halves, below knee or above shoulder it reduces to 5-10kg. Twisting while lifting reduces it further. This is why the risk assessment considers posture as a major factor.

What mechanical aids should I consider?

Common aids include: sack barrows, pallet trucks, stair climbers, panel lifters for plasterboard, brick/block grabs, chain blocks and hoists, mini cranes, and vacuum lifters. The cost of equipment is almost always less than the cost of a back injury claim.
